Le théâtre de papier
1986
Presentation of the artwork
The stained-glass partition is situated on the third floor of the building, in the library’s section for adults, where it separates a small room from the rest of the space. It is composed of irregularly shaped pieces of glass in shades of white, grey, and blue, with some red accents. These pieces of glass are caught between two panes of glass, and the whole is divided by a metallic frame that creates 19 sections. Four of them are perpendicular to the rest of the composition and contain mirrors. The room in which Le théâtre de papier is installed, Salle Montcalm, was once used as a theatre. The work is situated where the curtain was placed and suggests a new curtain that has been torn, revealing the memory of the place and the evolution of human thought, to which it provides access thanks to the knowledge contained in the library. Some of the glass pieces are engraved with symbols evoking books, people, and geometric figures.
