About the Public Art Bureau

Since 1989, the Public Art Bureau has been responsible for managing the municipal collection of public art. Today, the collection includes more than 360 artworks, the oldest one dating from 1809, integrated into public spaces (parks, squares, and plazas) and municipal buildings (libraries, cultural centres, sports facilities, and others).

The Bureau’s team is composed of experts in art history and restoration. These professionals implement the Bureau’s mission, which was entrusted to it by the Ville in its Action Plan for Public Art (1989) and renewed in the Framework of Action for Public Art (2010).

The mission of the Public Art Bureau is divided into three mandates.

Conservation
Regular maintenance at restoration sites and conservation activities to preserve the integrity of artworks, while respecting the artists’ intentions.

Development
Acquisition of artworks now includes contemporary art practices via competitions, by invitation or public notice, for professional artists. Donations also enhance the collection.

Promotion
The artworks in the collection are promoted in various ways, from publications to cultural mediation activities.

All of these activities are performed in collaboration with professionals in municipal and borough departments, as well as with governmental and private partners.
