The city hall was built between 1872 and 1878, then modified from 1923 to 1926 following a fire in 1922. The project was entrusted to the City Architects, first Louis Parant then Joseph-L.-D. Lafrenière, who were supervised by a consultative architectural commission led by Jean-Omer Marchand. In 1926, the five stained-glass pieces created by John Patrick O’Shea’s company were added to the council chamber’s windows.
