Chroma
2022
Presentation of the artwork
Chroma is a mural artwork composed of pieces, with the east side wall of the arena as its canvas. The mural represents six colourful flying doves and creates a visual effect of transformation as viewers move by it.Each of the six doves is made of alternating pairs of vertical aluminum strips in contrasting colours, inspired by the sky at sunrise, and they are integrated architecturally with the wall. Through a lenticular effect, the colour and shape of the birds modulates depending on the position of passersby. The work therefore gives the impression that the birds are moving, even though the alumimum pieces are static and attached to the wall.
These birds in flight reflect the values inherent to a community sports facility, particularly those of collaboration and team spirit. The multicoloured doves are a metaphor for a diversified community in constant transformation and growth, made up of all the individuals involved, in the image of the population of the Saint-Laurent borough.
Associated events
The work Chroma was created for part 3 of the Programme d’art mural, funded by the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal, an agreement concluded between the Ville de Montréal and the Gouvernement du Québec. It is integrated into the upgrading project for Aréna Raymond-Bourque, situated in the borough of Saint-Laurent.
Pavitra Wickramasinghe
Pavitra Wickramasinghe is a multidisciplinary artist whose approach involves the image in motion and conventions related to perception. She integrates drawing, animation, sculpture, and video into her works, and she is interested in ways of seeing and new ways of designing images in motion. She uses light and shadows as extensions of the projected image to create installations in which the “gazer” occupies a cinematographic space within that image.
